Create a composition in Photoshop utilizing masks and textures. At least one element was required to use a texture as a layer mask.
Behind the Scenes:
Having recently found and fallen in love with the image of the caracal depicted in the foreground, I wanted to incorporate it into a composition. Additional inspiration came from a scene in a Regency romance novel where a painter morphed a housecat into a large “tufted” hunting cat lounging at the side of a dashing corsair. I combined these two ideas with an old style photographic feel by adjusting the colors to warm sepia tones while adding a ragged edge, a scratches layer and some white noise.
I changed the texture on the very white chaise by masking and blending it with the tapestry fabric. This was accomplished with blending modes and semi-transparent, masked adjustment layers to ensure the shadows of the cushions blended seamlessly with the overlaying tapestry layer.
